What Truck Do You Need to Rent a Gooseneck Trailer
A gooseneck trailer requires a truck with a gooseneck ball installed through the bed floor. This is different from a standard bumper pull receiver hitch and different from a fifth-wheel hitch. Most one-ton trucks, including the Ford F-350, Ram 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 3500, are available with this setup and carry gooseneck towing ratings typically in the range of 20,000 to 30,000 pounds or more depending on the engine and configuration.
The truck's payload rating matters alongside its towing rating because gooseneck tongue weight, usually around 15 to 25 percent of the total trailer and load weight, transfers into the truck bed. A truck that meets the towing rating for a gooseneck load may still be over its payload rating if the tongue weight is substantial. Confirming both numbers before the rental date is the step that avoids a mismatch at pickup.
